Who Was Who Is Who #10

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, and with DC's New 52 well under way (how long are they keeping that title do you think?) I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of this year, who might make it and who hasn't got a Crazy Quilt's chance.

CONGO BILL / CONGORILLA - a surprise addition to James Robinson's run on Justice League of America the big ape played a big part in most of the adventures. Doubt we'll get to see him in the new DCU though.

THE CONSTRUCT - long ago robotic enemy of the Justice League who popped up occasionally, possessed someone's body then got defeated. Won't be seeing him any time soon.

CONTROLLERS - sort of cousins of the Guardians of the Universe, I wouldn't be too surprised to see Geoff Johns bring them back in the pages of Green Lantern at some point down the line; it would be nice to see them come in and teach the Guardians a thing or two. Thing is, there's so much planned in the GL titles, while I think they may come back, I don't think it'll be before the end of 2012.

COPPERHEAD - killed some time ago by the latest Manhunter, I doubt he'll be resurrected.

COSMIC BOY - well it wouldn't be the Legion of Super-Heroes without him, so even I know that he's alive and well in those pages post relaunch. That's one that's in place.

COSMIC KING - and then there's his evil counter-part. Not being a Legion reader, I can't guess whether he'll be back with any certainty at all. Over to the Crisis on Earth-Prime Legion guy, Dave Sopko to tell us in the comments whether this one will be back before the end of 2012.

THE COUNCIL - a bunch of Supergirl villains that nobody remembers. They ain't showing.

COUNT VERTIGO - a mainstay of the pre-Flashpoint Suicide Squad, I'm pretty sure we haven't seen him in the latest version; while I'm not reading it, I think David H would have mentioned it. Will he be back by year's end? I'm going for a possible.

CRAZY QUILT - hahahahahaaaaaaaa . . . no.

CREATURE COMMANDOS - another one already in place (in spirit at least) in the pages of the excellent Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E.

THE CREEPER - I don't think we've heard anything about the Creeper for some time and think it's unlikely that he'll join the DCU before the year's out.

CRIME DOCTOR - another villain who had scattered appearances throughout the DCU before the relaunch but I doubt he'll be back soon.

CRIME SYNDICATE - can we please get a good version of these guys back sometime soon? While I'm no massive fan of Grant Morrison, I have to admit that JLA: Earth 2 introduced a fantastic update on the Crime Syndicate in more ways than one; the follow up work (mostly, I think, by Kurt Busiek) worked a treat and even the Countdown / Hunt for Ray Palmer version called the Crime Society wasn't terrible. It's a great concept that needs to come back - will it make it before the end of 2012? I'm going to go with no, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them back in 2013.

CRIMSON AVENGER - no word on the status of the guy who was, pre-Flashpoint, regarded (within the DCU itself) as the first costumed hero. Will he make an appearance in Earth-2? Possibly.

CROC - or Killer Croc as he became known. Yeah, he's kicking around in the new DCU already.

CYBORG - and so's this guy. Vic Stone graduated from the Teen Titans and ended up playing in the Justice League following the relaunch. Personally, I'd have preferred to see the Martian Manhunter back in the big seven but I didn't get to chose.

CYCLOTRON - the grandfather of the original Atom, a reluctant villain who belatedly became a hero, the only way he'll appear is during a flashback in Earth-2 but I can't see that happening.

So in summary, four already in place (Cosmic Boy, Creature Commandos, [Killer] Croc and Cyborg), no definite predictions this week, but two possibles (Count Vertigo and Crimson Avenger) by the end of the year.

  1. Cosmic King was killed in battle with Variable Lad in the last issue of Adventure pre-New 52. I think that'll stick.

    1. Would totally agree, except that characters tend to not stay dead for too too long. I would say that seeing him again this year would be highly unlikely.

    2. And that's the main thing for these posts, guys - whether the characters will appear in the DCU before the end of 2012.
