Monday Memories #41 - Body Doubles #3

Each Monday this year I'll be taking a look back at a random comic, prestige format issue, graphic novel or collection of reprints from amongst my 3,000 or so comics that date from 1962 to 2003 - I figured anything in the last ten years would be too recent to hark back to.

The comics are chosen completely at random and apart from a four week lead-in period, even I don't know what I'll be looking at in the weeks to come!

BODY DOUBLES #3 - December 1999

Spinning out of Resurrection Man, the pair of female assassins for hire had fun in this four issue mini-series where, for reasons best not gone into too deeply lest we reveal how shallow they are, the Bonnie and Carmen are charged with kidnapping some of the most powerful women in the DCU on behalf of the alien Mystress.

The keyword in the above paragraph is fun as the pair of them are portrayed much, much lighter than in their parent title as they go about tracking down their quarry. In this issue it's Power Girl who's vacationing at a ski-resort and so, to get her attention, the Body Doubles arrive in armoured suits and set about causing havoc:

When was the last time you read dialogue like that, eh?

PG's attention is rapidly gained and it's not long at all before she's on the scene:

I love the "Yikes" on the sole of the boot!

She sends Carmen flying up the hill with one punch before turning to Bonnie, dismantling her suit before they both realise that Carmen's returning . . . along with most of the snow on the mountain in an avalanche which buries the lot of them.

And with that, PG's captured and it's on to the next victim.

The writing's light and funny but still remains true to the characters; the art is pure cheesecake without being so over the top (there's not boobs and butt shots for example) as to beggar belief; and the plot is clichéd but works if it's not taken too seriously.

An enjoyable four issue series that's worth picking up if you find it somewhere cheap.
