Who'd Like A Cocktail #57

Another shed-load of comics this week, including mucho Garth Ennis!

• The Boys #35 - we get the origin of Mother's Milk, a story which is just a bit . . . well . . . eeewwwww, really.
• Chronicles of Wormwood: The Last Battle #1 - another round of debauchery and devilry begins in fine form.
• Crossed #7 - this series keeps delivering shock after shock - Patrick's words to his mother? Jeez, that caught me by surprise.
• Doom Patrol #3 - man, Steve Dayton's messed in the head!
• Metal Men co-feature - veedle deedle veedle deedle veedle deedle veedle deedle! Heh!
• Final Crisis Aftermath: Run! #6 - the Human Flame stops running and takes on the JLA. C'mon, who did you think was going to win?! I've really enjoyed this series and can't wait for Sturges and Williams II to start on JSA All-Stars.
• Justice League: Cry For Justice #4 - five, Ollie? You had to wait until five villains had been tortured before speaking up? And even after that you still hung round with them? You're not the Green Arrow I know and like, Ollie. Despite that, this series (finally!) seems to be gathering some steam.
• Magog #2 - Magog's a "sucker for freckles" - who'd'a thought it?
• Project Superpowers: Meet The Bad Guys #2 - deathly white face? Check. Sideburns? Check. Thick black eye make-up? Check. Rides a bike? Check. Bad-ass attitude? Check. Look everyone: Lobo's in Project Superpowers as the Revolutionary!
• Red Tornado #2 - another good, solid issue though that cover is waaaaaaaay misleading!
• Strange Adventures #8 - everything changes but remains the same? That's the big finale? Not as satisfying as I'd hoped but still an enjoyable series overall.

And what made me smile this week:

Who said inter-company cross overs were dead!? That's the Human Flame doing his best jolly green giant impression in Final Crisis Aftermath: Run! #6

My weekly run down of the comics I get

• The Boys #33 - "Ith god b doth!!"  Garth Ennis does love a speech impaired character, doesn't he?
• Doom Patrol #1 - I've never picked up a Doom Patrol ongoing before and the only reason I got this was because of Keith Giffen's writing as I'm something of a fan. I'll definitely be around for the next few issues to see where this goes.
• Metal Men co-feature - ah, the JLI team back together, doing what they do best. Even if I hadn't enjoyed Doom Patrol, I'd probably picked it up for this anyway.
• Final Crisis Aftermath: Run #4 - easily the best of the Aftermath series, this continues to be great fun. However, I do have one demand for Mr Sturges: bring back Miss Army Knife! Coolest villain name ever!
• Justice League: Cry For Justice #2 - when I heard James Robinson was going to be writing this I was over the moon; having read two slow, stilted, poorly dialogued issues I fear for the future of the Justice League of America title when he takes over.
• Secret Six #12 - while I enjoyed this issue, I couldn't help wondering why Wonder Woman didn't simply use her lasso to get what she wanted . . . ?
• Strange Adventures #6 - alien fish and a giant slice of pepperoni pizza. Just when you thought this series was slowing down . . .
• Wednesday Comics #5 - still way more hits than misses; I think the only stories I'm not reading are Wonder Woman and Strange Adventures, both due to the artwork which doesn't really work for me.

And what made me smile this week? Actually, several things did:

I mean, seriously, would anyone mess with Artemis right now?

Who'd Like A Cocktail? #40

Will be back to more regular posting next week once the busy time in work calms down again. In the meantime: comics!

• Back To Brooklyn #5 - Ennis and Palmiotti wrap up the series with a wonderful display of brotherly love;
• The Boys #31 - more Ennis madness with The Boys, but this time Carlos Ezquerra joins in!
• Final Crisis Aftermath: Run! #2 - I swear I can't wait for Sturges and Willingham to start on Justice Society of America; this issue's excellent and it's only written by one of them;
• The Punisher: Naked Kill - a brutal and inventive way of getting down the outside of a building;
• Seaguy: Slaves of Mickey Eye #3 - well thank goodness that wrapped all the loose ends up and explained everything . . . oh, wait a moment . . .
• Secret Six #10 - can't help feeling for these guys . . . and only then realising that they're the bad guys - damn, this is good;
• Strange Adventures #4 - Starlin's plans to bugger up Hawkman's origins have obviously been short-circuited as he's no longer going to be involved in this series.

And what made me smile this week:

For the first time that Secret Six has been in the list, it gets trumped by the wonderful Final Crisis Aftermath: Run! and the Human Flame seriously misjudging those cute little doggies!
