Each Monday this year I'll be taking a look back at a random comic, prestige format issue, graphic novel or collection of reprints from amongst my 3,000 or so comics that date from 1962 to 2003 - I figured anything in the last ten years would be too recent to hark back to.
The comics are chosen completely at random and apart from a four week lead-in period, even I don't know what I'll be looking at in the weeks to come!

Rise Of The Third Army
DC have released a little more information about their forthcoming Green Lantern crossover tale, Rise of The Third Army.
It's been teased for some time - basically the Guardians of the Universe, those once benign blue little munchkins who pretended to have a handle on cosmic affairs, have been getting meaner and meaner over the last year or two and have decided to do away with the Green Lanterns and replace them with a Third Army, the First being the Manhunters and the second the Corps. Of course, they're not counting the space cops that preceded the Corps...
One of the main things released in the news item is a marvellous picture by Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Albert Oclair, and Rod Reis which forms the four inter-connecting covers for issues of Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Green Lantern: New Guardians and Red Lanterns:
Click the above for a slightly bigger version, but the original article has a huuuuuuge version of it.
Notable by their absence from the pic are Hal Jordan and Sinestro; couple that with the similarity between the original promo pic in the top left there with that used for the Death of Superman storyline and it seems possible that one or both of them die. Sinestro's death would prevent Jordan from being in the Corps - he's currently dependent on a ring created by Sinestro - which would explain why they're missing, but the inclusion of the new, masked Green Lantern seems to imply that it's Jordan that dies. Why else would the ring choose "our newest Green Lantern from Earth"?
I also couldn't help but notice that Carol Ferris as Star Sapphire finally gets to cover more than 12% of her body - about time, I say.
Oh, and a happy 4th of July to my American readers!

Guardians Of The Universe Come To Their Senses
At least they did in the Another Nail Elseworlds tale from way back when.
Now if we can just get the little blue munchkins to admit their mistakes in this Universe we can get back to liking the all-knowing guys as opposed to hoping that Hal Jordan and Sinestro beat the crap out of them.

Who Was Who Is Who #18
So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Grim Ghost's chance.
GORILLA CITY - probably going to appear (if it hasn't already) but as it's a place I'm not counting it.

Retroactive - The 80's Part 2
As DC Comics are celebrating the creators that made an impact in the 70's, 80's and 90's, I thought I'd wander through the same decades and pull out my favourite comic of each year.
Welcome back to the 80's!

Four Becomes Three
In all the hullabaloo of Flashpoint, I've hardly mentioned the upcoming War of The Green Lanterns event that's going to be running around the same time as the GL movie will be out. Specifically, there's been the couple of mentions of losing one of the Earth/Sector 2814 Lanterns.
At the end of Green Lantern #62, after getting his ass kicked, Hal Jordan has some sort of vision of the future:
That black on yellow dialogue fits in with what we've seen of Krona, intimating that Jordan's possession by Parallax was somehow a deliberate punishment from the Guardians. Then we have the Guardians themselves proclaiming how dangerous he is post-War (so he obviously survives - no surprise there) since "the loss of one of the Lanterns of Sector 2814."

It Represents People
In Green Lantern: Emeral Warriors #4, Sodam Yat rebelled against the Guardians of the Universe, taking his Daxamite followers and planning to start up his own Corps . . . or take over the existing one after ousting the little blue fellas in charge.
His rebellion comes complete with a change of symbol:
Isn't that a lovely ideal? To represent "Everyone -- in every corner of this universe."
People like these:
and these:
and these:
and not forgetting these guys:
Yep, that's what you need - a symbol to represent all those that don't conform to the anthorpomorphic template of two arms, two legs and a head.
Oh dear.

It Was All Hal Jordan's Fault In The First Place
As I mentioned yesterday, I've just posted some notes about the Nekron story in Tales of The Green Lantern Corps over at the Annotated Blackest Night. To get those notes done, I obviously re-read the story, the first time I'd done so in ages. When I did, I noticed something a bit . . . odd.
In short, the Guardians have gather every Green Lantern on Oa - that's all 3,600 of them so you know it's going to be important. Hell, they even drafted in Charlie Vicker:
who seems to have a . . . close . . . relationship with Stel . . . which is fine, you know, I'm not judging - just going for the cheap joke.
Anyhow, like I said, it's an important meeting as evidenced by Tomar-Re and the other Honour Guards showing up:
I wonder why Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner don't have those fancy red sashes now that they're Honour Guards . . . ?
Anyhow, like the bird-man says, "Time is of the essence!" There's no time to delay - things have to get going and, after the Guardians arrive, Jordan does just that. He gets going . . . at least his mouth does:
See, he's only just met Arisia who doesn't know squat about the Guardians or their history so Jordan fills her in concerning Krona, that bad guy who wanted desperately to see the origin of the universe.
And he takes three and a half pages to do it even though, as his good friend Tomar-Re said:
And what do the Guardians do when Jordan's babbling away about Krona?
Nothing!
They wait until he's finished!!
Sure, Guardian, explain the URGENT REASON you've brought them together after you let Jordan finish his story. Don't you realise:
It's so urgent you summon every Green Lantern, it's so urgent you bring them all to Oa all at once, it's all so very, very urgent but you let Jordan tell Krona's story for too long:
Not ready?!
Not ready?!
Who's fault is that?!
Hal Jordan - smug son of a bitch.
