DC's August Solicitations

All Star Western #23:
"Hex is trapped in modern-day Gotham City…and he’s getting ready to shoot his way out! Find out how he got here—and see what part Batman plays! And in the backup story, the Vigilante seeks revenge!"
As cool as it might be to see Hex in the present day, I'm wondering if the Vigilante is going to be Greg Saunders or a totally new guy.

Guess Who's Back

As you may be aware by now, the Tasmanian Devil has reappeared in the DCU in the pages of last week's Starman/Congorilla one-shot and I for one am glad. As I mentioned in Sunday's Cocktail post, however, it does sort of make a mockery of Blackest Night's raison d'etre.

Who'd Like A Cocktail? #61

Yet another double sized issue this week as I was away celebrating my wife's birthday last weekend. Had I been around, this is what I would have picked up:

  • The Brave And The Bold #29 - not a terrible story, but neither did it really do anything either. The Geek's jaded view of the present when compared to the 60's is naive to say the least: the 60's were all peace and love but the present's all gloom and isolation? Nonsense - both the past and the present are much too complicated to be summed up in six panels.
  • Justice Society of America 80-Page Giant #1 - I've long enjoyed the occasional 80-Page Giants as the anthology format allows for a good mix of stories, throwing out some gems along with others that are a little so-so. Unfortunately, this whole issue landed on the so-so side of the fence with nothing really standing out as anything special for me. That's also the risk you take with anthologies, I guess.
  • The Stand: Soul Survivors #2 - the survivors start coming together as they head for Mother Abigail's place. Excellent art as always but, by necessity, still a somewhat truncated story.
And what made me smile last week:
Black Lantern Turkey!

But on to this week's comics now:

  • Blackest Night #5 - man, those last couple of pages? I read those and just said "Holy crap,"
  • The Dark Tower: Fall of Gilead #6 - the fall finally came despite the boobytraps and defences the gunslingers put in place.
  • Green Lantern #48 - the All Lantern Corps finally gets together and romps straight into the pages of Blackest Night #5. Damn, I'm enjoying this series!
  • Justice League: Cry For Justice #5 - Warning! Events depicted on the cover of this comic do not represent the contents of the same! Ollie? You're really going to leave Roy bleeding on the floor just to run off and get the bad guy? Man, you should be looking after your boy first.
  • Justice League of America #39 - yay! Vibe's back! Steel's back! Justice League Detroit's back together! (Hey, I liked the Detroit-era League and I'm not afraid to say it)
  • Justice Society of America #33 - well, we knew the big split was coming so no surprise there, but the story itself was still satisfying.
  • Project Superpowers: Meet The Bad Guys #4 - is that an ED-209 the Scarab's fighting?!
  • Teen Titans #77 - you know, I almost feel sorry for Deathstroke with the amount of Black Lanterns he's got against him!
And what made me smile this week:

Heh - Agent Orange may be a psycho but he's funny with it.

Who'd Like A Cocktail? #34

Two comics! Two bloody comics this week! Hardly worth going in to see my local comic shop.

  • Justice League of America #32 - Dr Light's well pissed off and Starbreaker's back in town.
  • Trinity #47 - why would Red Arrow called Nightwing by an abbreviation that contains twice as many syllables?
And what made me chuckle this week (not that there was much choice):
Supergirl really needs to work on her rallying cry, doesn't she? "Smack 'em up!" is hardly "Titans together!" is it?

Who'd Like A Cocktail? #2

It was something of a tough week this week to choose which comic to babble about; Booster Gold #2 was a clear front runner for a while, as was Green Lantern #23. The Search For Ray Palmer Wildstorm one-shot almost made it and there was the Ostrander written Suicide Squad to consider among others.

Eventually, though, I went for the Justice League of America Wedding Special which is essentially Dwayne McDuffie's first issue as writer of Justice League of America.

I'll admit I don't really know the guy's work; a quick look through my database shows a couple of one-shots and the dreadful wrap-up he did for the last series of Firestorm. As far as I'm aware, that was a job he was handed and told to finish it as soon as rather than him running it into the ground and that's kind of encouraging. Those last three issues of Firestorm were terrible but this Wedding Special mostly works.

I say mostly as there's a couple of things that niggle - particularly the appearance of Felix Faust in the Hall of Doom (pictured on the right) as well as Major Force in the double splash page showcasing the villains Luthor has assembled. Faust is meant to be imprisoned in Dr Fate's tower as at the end of 52 - a fate which is shown in this week's Black Adam #2 - and Major Force was killed by Captain Atom/Monarch at the end of Battle For Bludhaven. I know Force has died and returned several times, but even so - post-Infinite Crisis, continuity in the DCU is supposed to be a lot smoother.

Those quibbles aside, however, this was an enjoyable story even if, despite the title, it didn't actually focus on the wedding at all. McDuffie seems to have a handle on the characters as shown by the exchange between Red Arrow and Batman and it was nice to read a copy of JLoA without trying to remember which characters' narration boxes were which colour. As much as I enjoyed Brad Meltzer's run on the series (as well as Identity Crisis) trying to work out who was narrating based on the colour of the box was a pain in the arse.

The Wedding Planner leaves me eager for the main run of McDuffie's JLoA; while it wasn't the best comic ever, it was more than enough to whet the appetite.
