Monday Memories #36 - Legend Of The Hawkman #3

Each Monday this year I'll be taking a look back at a random comic, prestige format issue, graphic novel or collection of reprints from amongst my 3,000 or so comics that date from 1962 to 2003 - I figured anything in the last ten years would be too recent to hark back to.

The comics are chosen completely at random and apart from a four week lead-in period, even I don't know what I'll be looking at in the weeks to come!

Earth 2 Hawkgirl

CBR has an exclusive look at the cover of Earth 2 #4 which features the new Hawkgirl:

You can see a much bigger version over at CBR where James Robinson says
"As the co-creator of the original Kendra Saunders, I've taken pains to keep the essence of her personality while adding a more two-fisted quality to her as well. I'm also enjoying developing another aspect to her, in that with the absence of Batman, she must also step up and become the great detective of Earth 2."
The character not only looks good - big white wings, dual pistols - but she gets to be the detective of the Justice Society as well.

Happy days, eh?

Who Was Who Is Who #19

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Helix's chance.

GUNNER & SARGE - again, an example of those characters that a year or so ago you'd never have expected to see in a mainstream DC title. However, with DC still going for war titles even after Men of War didn't make the cut, it wouldn't surprise me if they turned up before 2012 finished. They're going in the possible column.

Who'd Like A Cocktail? #95

Garth Ennis introduces us to the least feminine transvestite ever

  • THE BOYS: HIGHLAND LADDIE #1 - so Wee Hughie's headed back to Scotland, to meet up with his old friends (one of whom has changed more than a little) and get away from the madness of The Boys back in New York. With smugglers peddling in super-drugs in the same town, it seems likely their paths will cross. May I predict a hugely oversized adversary for Hughie, employed by the drug smugglers, who will also be quite humourous either in name and/or appearance?
  • BRIGHTEST DAY #8 - so there's another green Martian kicking around which stuns J'onn J'onzz; Hawkgirl gets a bit of a family surprise; and Hawkman begins raising an army. All told, this is rattling along at a good pace.
  • THE DARK TOWER: THE GUNSLINGER - THE JOURNEY BEGINS #4 - for the very first time in all the Dark Tower books I've bought since the series began, I found myself thinking this is awful. Not the art, which is as gorgeous as ever, but the dreadful, stilted dialogue. Hopefully just a one-off glitch as I've been enjoying these books til now.
  • DCU LEGACIES #4 - ah, the rise of the kid sidekick and the Royal Flush Gang! It truly is the Silver Age again! One query, though, from a continuity frame of mind: the meeting of the two Flashes - isn't this contradicting the whole Central City being asleep thing from a few years back?
  • GREEN LANTERN CORPS #51 - Ganthet learns what it means to have emotions as he and the other Lanterns try to fight back against the Cyborg-Superman. And is there hope for the Alpha-Lanterns after all?
  • JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #42 - still a little hit and miss with Robinson at the helm but better than the recent Justice League issues. Still, Mark Bagley's art is lovely!
  • POWER GIRL #15 - my god, am I enjoying a Judd Winick written comic? Still not a patch on Palmiotti / Gray / Conner, this books is actually holding its own with me. Winick, despite my many and public reservations, actually seems to not be ruining Power Girl, either the book or the character. Of course, it's still early days and there's plenty of time for unsubtle, ham-fisted crowbarring of relevant social issues into the pages but for now let's hope he keeps it on this tack.
And what made me smile:

"My shiny platinum tush!" Lois Lane gets put in her place by Platinum of the Metal Men.

Final Crisis #4 Annotations Complete

Finished the notes on Final Crisis #4 over at the Annotated Final Crisis.

There's a few things I need a hand with in this issue in so far as identifying a couple of characters. You can find all the ones in the Help Needed page but lets see if we can get something out here as well:

Pages 12-13 - Panel 1    In the skies above Checkmate's castle, Hawkgirl battles Silver Swan though I'm unsure as to who the flaming, flying character on the left is. Anyone?

Pages 12-13 - Panel 3    Green Lantern Alan Scott stands in front of a large screen depicting the status of various heroes. In the very top right hand corner is an unknown gold coloured man.  --  solved; it was Robotman.

Pages 12-13 - Panel 5    Not reading Checkmate, I'm unsure of who the speaker is; beside him are Amanda Waller and The Question, Rene Montoya.  --  solved; it was Taleb Beni Khalid.

Page 24 - Panel 2    Above the Checkmate castle from the top down are Killer Moth; an unknown Justifier; Hawkgirl; possibly Sun Girl; Green Lantern Alan Scott; Bolt; Man-Bat; and, in the whirlpool, Typhoon.
