Who Was Who Is Who #43

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Stiletta's chance.

STARFIRE - no, not the one you're immediately thinking of but the swords and sorcery heroine on the left there who surprised us all by showing up in the pages of Time Masters: Vanishing Point just before the whole Flashpoint thing. Don't think she'll be making an appearance again, though.

STARFIRE - okay, so this is the one you're thinking of with the metal bikini and all the controversy following her first appearance post-Flashpoint. For better or worse (I've not read them) Starfire's in Red Hood and The Outlaws so gets in the in place column.

STAR HAWKINS - futuristic private eye? Yeah, can't see him reappearing.

STAR HUNTERS - the original Who's Who entry concludes with "NOTE: This series is not connected to the DC Universe continuity." Clears that up, then.

STARMAN - can anyone really see Earth-2 written by James Robinson not containing a Starman at some point? Sure, it won't be Jack Knight but Ted Knight at least has to appear, doesn't he? Whether it's the Ted Knight or Prince Gavyn (both versions are shown in Who's Who) Starman or another one entirely, I'm going for a definite here.

STARRO - the big starfish kinda/sorta appeared in the last pages of Justice League #6 after the team had defeated Darkseid so I guess he goes in the in place column by default.

THE STAR ROVERS - ummm, no, I don't think so.

STAR SAPPHIRE - another already in place thanks to the Green Lantern titles, Carol's been running round in her sparkly underwear for some time now.

STEEL - as in Hank Heywood who died at the end of the Justice League Detroit experiment so he won't be back; however John Henry Irons is apparently in Action Comics so he gets to go in the in place column.

STEELCLAW - the mayor of Star City back in the old days. Can't see him returning.

STEPPENWOLF - here's a surprise. Of all the New Gods characters to get an appearance in the New 52 we had Darkseid as the Justice League's first villain accompanied by Desaad and Steppenwolf. Sure, he only appeared briefly and in the shadows but it's enough to get him in place.

STERLING SILVERSMITH - another little known Batman villain that, I'm confident in saying, we won't be seeing again.

STILETTA - an ally of Jonah Hex after he'd been transported through time to the far future. As that isn't going to happen any time soon, I guess Stiletta won't be showing up either.

STONE BOY - I was all ready to write this guy off but a quick check on the internets shows he appeared in Legion of Super Heroes. Guess that's enough to get him in the in place column.

STRIPESY - hmmm, while I think it possible that we might get an appearance of the Star Spangled Kid in Earth-2 I'm not so confident of the slightly corny named Stripesy. However, I'll put him in the possibles.

So in summary six in place (Starfire, Starro, Star Sapphire, Steel, Steppenwolf and Stone Boy) one definite prediction (Starman) and one possible (Stripesy)

  1. And now we know Star Hawkins and Starfire II, the space gal who's not orange, are coming in Threshold. And Jonah Hex is, appallingly, going back to the future. The New 52, eh?

    1. Starfire wasn't as much a surprise as Star Hawkins, I have to admit - but of course, Threshold isn't out until next year and these predictions are whether we see the characters by the end of 2012 so I'm still right!

      But only just!

    2. Forgot to mention - if it were anyone else doing Jonah Hex in the future, I'd be worried; as it's Palmiotti and Gray, along with Moritat, I'm happy to see what they do with it.

  2. If I were a gambling man, I would say we will be getting the female version of the Star Spangled Kid soon, with a version of Stripesy as her father or uncle or something

    1. Yep, Star Spangled Kid's in the new Justice League of America title starting next year and as it's Courtney Whitmore, Stripesy may well be back as her step-dad.

If I were you, I'd find someone to take that bet!
