Who Was Who Is Who #44

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Syonide's chance.

STRONG BOW - another Old West character that may benefit from All Star Western so will go into the possible column.

SUICIDE SQUAD - while the make-up of the current team doesn't really resemble either the original or the post-Crisis classic line-up, they're still going into the in place column.

SUN BOY - one of the bigger names in the Legion, a quick check reveals that he is indeed already in place in the pages of Legion of Super Heroes.

SUNBURST - one of a handful of Japanese heroes, most of whom harness the power of the sun. Typecast, much? Either way, Sunburst died during the original Crisis on Infinite Earths so while it's possible he might be back in action at some point (Crisis never having happened in the post-Flashpoint world) I don;t think it's likely.

SUNDEVILS - another series that has nothing to do with DC continuity. Move along, move along.

SUN-EATER - these things have cropped up from time to time and it wouldn't surprise me if we saw one of more of them updated at some point but they're not really characters so I'm not counting them either way.

SUPER-CHIEF - aside from a very brief appearance during 52 where the new Super-Chief turned up and got killed, I don't think anyone's really expecting to see this guy any time soon.

SUPERGIRL - and here we are, into the Super family. Supergirl's definitely in place, ridiculous knee boots and all, so she goes into the in place column.

SUPERMAN - this is the Earth-2 version which, thanks to the alternate cover of Earth-2 that was released a while back (this is being written in April) we can say he's definitely going to appear. At least a new and updated version of him who's lost Lois Lane and is apparently willing to kill is going to appear. But hey, he's Superman from Earth-2 so that counts for me.

SUPERMAN - and the Earth-1 version is obviously in place, sans red underpants and no longer married to Lois, but he's there.

SWAMP THING - a surprise success of the New 52 was the excellent Swamp Thing revival which has worked a treat and so he definitely makes it into the in place column. One thing that did surprise me about the original entry in Who's Who is that Swampy gets a two-page spread. If that's not an indication of just how much Alan Moore at the time had raised the profile of this until-then secondary character, I don't know what is.

SYONIDE - enemy of the Outsiders, I don't think we need to worry about her turning up.

So in summary we have six in place (Suicide Squad, Sun Boy, Supergirl, E-2 Superman, E-1 Superman and Swamp Thing) no definite predictions and one possible (Strong Bow)

By the way, eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that there's no Superboy mentioned. This was covered in a note from the editors in issue #22 which talked about the changes following the Crisis and what to include:

So even though Superboy had "only recently left" the continuity, he was still scrapped. Still, least he's back now, eh?

But what about Superboy-Prime?

You hear that, Geoff Johns? Can you leave Superboy-Prime alone now?

  1. Well that makes no sense - keeping Supergirl but deleting Superboy, when both were lost to the same event?

One of the saddest things about the New 52 for me is that we never got to see Bob Greenberger's new Who's Who, scheduled for last year.

    1. I know - leaving out Superboy seemed completely arbitrary.

And yeah, a new Who's Who was something that was promised a few years ago and which I was eagerly awaiting. Those one-page snap shots in the recent #0 issues just weren't the same.
