So Captain marvel gets a new look, complete with hood, electricity and a grim and gritty snarl. M'eh.
Oops, sorry, he's also changed his name to Shazam.
DC revealed his new look (via the New York Post) saying that they changed his name in part because
"a lot of people already thought that was his name, anyway."which, I guess, is a fair enough reason to do it.
It's not like there's any other reason to change his name, is there.
Capt. Mar...er, I mean Shazam, should not ever be a grim and gritty character. They should have just given the book to Jeff Smith to work on. He was able to tell an engaging story that hit on every level with the character and his 'family'.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree. There's no need for every single character to be burdened with despair and grief, raging against the injustices of the world. Sure you can have good stories featuring those characters, but why not leave Marvel... err... Shazam as more innocent and fun?
DeleteOf course, we're pre-judging based on one picture so who knows, Geoff Johns might surprise us yet.
He might at that. But given the state of most of the characters he has redone...I tend to think that Cap is going to be a little more serious than I like him. He does not have to be the joke of a character (like he was in the early Giffen JL - not that it was terrible, just thought they took the thing a little far at times), nut he should not be serious either.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm kinda hoping for a best of both worlds scenario where we get fun and entertaining adventures which we know Johns can do - think of Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. - but which aren't littered with "Holy moley!" moments.
