Monday Memories #1 - Preacher #37
Each Monday this year I'll be taking a look back at a random comic, prestige format issue, graphic novel or collection of reprints from amongst my 3,000 or so comics that date from 1962 to 2003 - I figured anything in the last ten years would be too recent to hark back to.
The comics are chosen completely at random and apart from a four week lead-in period, even I don't know what I'll be looking at in the weeks to come!
PREACHER #37 - May 1998
And what an issue to start the year off with a really big bang. Jesse Custer, Tulip and Cassidy have faced off against the Saint of Killers in Monument Valley where Herr Starr has been laying in wait before sending his troops in against the Saint. It all goes to hell when Starr orders a nuclear strike against the Saint, confident that this will be the end of him leading to this perfect scene:
As cool as that scene is, there was more to come in the issue as Jesse falls and Cass starts down the road that will lead to his ruin.
There's a reason Preacher was so successful all those years ago: it was damn good. Sure, there were one or two slow moments but the vast majority was just spot on.
Of course, now I'm tempted to re-read the entire run again . . .

It was a fun ride, and no mistake. I caught up in trades, for that DVD box set experience.
ReplyDeleteI've got the whole set (including mini-series and one-offs) and every now and then think about getting the trades just for ease of re-reading. Maybe when I win the lottery...
