Who Was Who Is Who #33

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Nuclear Family's chance.

NIGHTSHADE - pretty sure the last time we saw Nightshade was in Shadowpact which folded far too quickly for my liking. Don't think she's made it into the New 52 yet (as at the start of April) and while it'd be nice to see her, I don't think it likely.

NIGHT-SLAYER - a Batman villain that sounds like a metal band. Don't think Bruce needs to worry about this guy turning up again.

NIGHTWING - having survived and editorial edict to kill him off during Infinite Crisis, Dick Grayson's alive and well and in his eponymous title so he goes into the "in place" column.

NIGHTWING AND FLAMEBIRD - wouldn't surprise me to see the Kandorian heroes appearing in one form or another, reimagined by Grant Morrison for today's discerning reader, but I don't think it'll be before the end of the year.

NIMBUS - tied in with the Omega Men as he is, I don't think we'll be seeing him any time soon.

NOCTURNA - one of Batman's many girlfriends, this one apparently adopted Jason Todd at one point in the hopes of getting Batman to marry her! Don't think we'll be seeing her soon.

NORTHWIND - one of Infinity Inc, it seems unlikely that we'll see him, even on Earth-2 given what we now know about the forthcoming (start of April, remember!) series and how the old heroes in the JSA aren't actually that old.

NUCLEAR FAMILY - these robots last showed up, I think, in the Battle for Bludhaven mini-series; I don't think there's any chance of them turning up soon.

NUKLON - like Northwind above, the lack of parent-figures in the JSA would seem to preclude the appearance of any of the Infinitors so, sadly, I don't think we'll be seeing Nuklon for a while.

OBSIDIAN - and here's another one that we can pretty much forget about; with the news that Green Lantern Alan Scott and the other JSA'ers are going to be in the mid-twenties, there won't have been time to sire a shadow-controlling son.

OCEAN MASTER - at the time of writing, Black Manta's just appeared in the pages of Aquaman. With one of his big bad guys back, I'd be surprised if Ocean Master doesn't make an appearance so he's going in the possible column.

OLYMPIAN GODS - some of these are apparently in the new Wonder Woman series so they go in the "in place" column.

O.M.A.C. - while the series didn't survive the first cull of the New 52, OMAC was a surprise appearance at the start of it so gets into the "in place" column.

THE OMEGA MEN - as I've mentioned on their individual entries throughout these posts, I don't think there's much chance of these guys appearing in the New 52 at all, let alone before the end of 2012.

ONYX - don't think there's been any sign of this Batman / Green Arrow ally for some time now.

So in summary, three in place (Nightwing, the Olympian Gods and O.M.A.C.) no definite predictions and one possible (Ocean Master)

  1. Are you reading Deathstroke? I believe there are some space heroes in there called The Omegas. Maybe they're an Omega Men update?

    1. No, not getting Deathstroke; if you confirm The Omegas are the Omega Men by any other name, let me know, yeah?

  2. The November solicits have Ocean Master in Aquaman #14, so that's a definite.

  3. Nocturna was in Detective Comics #9, page 4:

Don't sell the Queen of the Night short. She's a lot more than 'one of Batman's many girlfriends'...

  4. along with Count Vertigo, Bronze Tiger and Rick Flag i'm still waiting for Nightshade to appear in the new 52. i dunno if you saw it or not but i recently did a posting about a weird inconsistency in the old DCU having to do with Nightshade while she was with Shadowpact.

    1. Been away for a few days so will have to catch up with the Nightshade article. I'm kinda hoping she turns up as I've a lot of time for the old Charlton characters.
