Who Was Who Is Who #27

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Malagigi's chance.

LUTHOR - ah, anyone else remember the days of multiple Earths and different variations of both heroes and villains? Well, I guess they never went away for that long, what with Elseworlds, Hypertime, Infinite Crisis, Countdown and all the others (not to mention the forthcoming Earth-2 - this is being written in mid-March, people!) but you know what I mean. It got so that Lex Luthor had various versions featured in Who's Who:

Alexei Luthor - the Earth Two version. From the info released on the new Earth-2 we know that Superman has lost Lois somehow; could the E-2 version of Lex be behind that? He goes into the possible column for that.

Lex Luthor - the Earth One version is comfortably in place in the Superman titles which comes as no surprise.

Alexander Luthor - the heroic Earth Three version, I doubt very much we'll be seeing him any time soon, unless the Crime Syndicate somehow return and he gets to fight them again, but it's unlikely.

Alexander Luthor, Jr - one of the heroes of the original Crisis... and then one of the villains of Infinite Crisis, he ended up being killed by the Joker and, at least from the point of view of an accomplice, by his E-1 counterpart as well. As the Crisis never happened in the New 52, I can't see Alex appearing again for a long, long time if ever.

MAALDOR THE DARKLORD - and talking of the original Crisis, I don't think Mally here's been seen since then so I wouldn't wait up too long for him.

MACHISTE - another inhabitant of Skataris that, as far as I'm aware, we won't be seeing as that world appears to have vanished in the new DCU.

MADAME .44 - and yet another Old West hero that may well benefit from the joy that is All-Star Western. I mean, c'mon, who doesn't love a masked gunwoman fighting for justice? She goes in the possible column.

MADAME ROUGE - a member of the Brotherhood of Evil, the foes of the Doom Patrol, I guess her fate's tied in with them and whether the Patrol make a return to the DCU before the end of the year. I don't know of anything planned so I'm going to guess we won't see her yet.

MADAME XANADU - the good Madame appears in Justice League Dark as well as Demon Knights so comfortably made the transition into the New 52.

MADEMOISELLE MARIE - a character rooted in the Second World War's French Resistance, it's hard to see her turning up, even in the pages of G.I. Combat.

THE MAD HATTER - as far as I can see by trawling the internet, I don't think the Mad Hatter's yet shown his face in any of the new Batman titles, but I could be wrong - please let me know if I am. Meantime, he's going in the possible column as it wouldn't surprise me to see him by the end of the year.

MAGNETIC KID - Cosmic Boy's brother, I think he's still dead post-Flashpoint or at least not a member of the Legion any more and Dave Sopko, the official COEP Legion go to guy, agrees: "Magnetic Kid is still deceased in this altered reality.  No seeing him unless they resort to a flashback."

MAJOR DISASTER - an old Green Lantern villain that was turned into a bumbling comedy hero by Giffen and DeMatteis before being made into something of a genuine hero with the Justice League. Unlikely we'll see him by the end of the year which is a shame, as I always had a soft spot for him.

MAL - as in Mal Duncan, former Herald, former Vox, former Titan, former Doom Patrol member, formerly married to Bumblebee. Things got messed up for Mal after Infinite Crisis and 52 so I don't think he's going to be around any time soon.

MALAGIGI - yeah, I doubt we'll be seeing this 8th century wizard . . . unless Paul Cornell slips him into Demon Knights. Nah, can't see it happening.

MAMMOTH - no word yet on the appearance of the Fearsome Five to face off against the new Teen Titans, so I think we can safely say Mammoth's extinct. (See what I did there?!)

MAN-BAT - I'm not aware of Kirk Langstrom turning up in the New 52 but it wouldn't surprise me if he did, whether as Man-Bat or not so I'm going to put him in the possible column.

So in summary, two in place (E-1 Lex Luthor and Madame Xanadu) no definite predictions and four possibles (E-2 Lex Luthor, Madame .44, Mad Hatter, Man-Bat)

  1. I think the New 52 Madame Rouge (to be) has indeed appeared, what with Robotman in My Greatest Adventure palling around with one Maddy Rouge.

    1. So she's not Madame Rouge yet? Either way, nicely spotted, mate!
