Who Else Would Wear It?

A good few years ago, before they had their latest falling out, DC and Marvel teamed up and produced a couple of cross-company series and one-shots. Perhaps the best and certainly the longest anticipated was Kurt Busiek and George Perez's JLA/Avengers mini-series.

The story pitted cosmic entities from both universes pitting the heroes against one another before they overcame their differences, teamed up, turned the tables and defeated the bad guys. In the midst of the story, though, they entered a shared reality where both teams had co-existed in their own universes, sharing annual crossovers and adventures which led to this splash page aboard the JLA's satellite:

It's a typical Perez scene, crammed full of lots of characters interacting with each other. Hawkeye and Green Arrow use trick shots to try and best each other; Red Tornado shows Vision and Scarlet Witch pictures of his adopted daughter, Traya; Guy Gardner tries chatting up Moondragon.

Over the years, I've read this series several times but it's only now I've noticed Sue Dibny's T-shirt:

Just Add Boobs (Redux)

Just as I did last November, I find myself wondering how we go from this:

to this:

It's the newly announced Robyn Hood series from Zenescope, the company that will take your childhood stories and stick a pair of boobs on them.

Who Was Who Is Who #26

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Lord Shilling's chance.

LEGION OF SUPER-PETS - oh, bless 'em. Another glorious idea from a more innocent time that won't ever see the light of day in mainstream DC continuity again. Or at least not before the end of 2012. Dave Sopko, the official COEP Legion go to guy, agrees saying "Sadly, the Super Pets will likely not be heard from again.  Although Krypto was seen in Action I believe...no group appearances though."

THE LEGION OF SUPER-VILLAINS - with the Legion up and running, I suppose it's possible that their evil counterparts may well show up at some point. I doubt they'll be around before the year's out, though I'm willing to take Dave's word for it when he says "Big story just before the reboot, so they should be on the back burner as a group for a while."

LIBERTY BELLE - with the recent (writing this in early March) news about what we can expect in Earth-2, it seems increasingly unlikely that we'll have a retro alternate earth to look forward to. Having said that, some characters have already been mentioned as appearing in Earth-2 so I'm putting Belle into the possibles.

Dredd Trailer

Oh yeah!

Sure, the song at the start's a bit weak (but better than the rash of industrial / grunge metal that gets tagged on to these movies) and the drug slo-mo is bound to invite tons of bullet-time style scenes but Karl Urban looks great as Dredd, although he could do with a shave - Dredd's never been a fan:

Martians, Midnighters And Cats! Oh My!

Just read this short interview with Peter Milligan, writer of Stormwatch over at CBR and in it they mention news that I'd obviously missed:
"solicitations for future issues indicate that J'onn J'onzz is set to quit Stormwatch"
Hadn't realised that, but I hope J'onn ends up somewhere instead of just vanishing into the ether.

The interview also mentioned the issue of Red Lanterns that Milligan used as a cross-over with Stormwatch which I didn't pick up, thus meaning I have missed something splendid:

I'd like to think we live in a world where I don't need to say this but evidence would show otherwise: do NOT punch cats, people! This is a comic book, not an instruction manual.

Who Was Who Is Who #25

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Lady Lunar's chance.

KRONA - I suppose you could claim Krona was the DCU's original bad guy what with causing the Multiverse to be born with less energy than it was supposed to. Still, those uber-cosmic crimes are no longer something he gets up to as he was last seen stealing rings and power batteries and entities (oh my!) in Green Lantern before being killed by Hal Jordan. Unlikely he'll be back before the end of 2012.

KRYPTO - apparently he's shown in the reboot on Krypton without powers but that still counts for me.

Seriously, if the title of your graphic novel is Bazongas, I don't think you need to find out "more information on this item" You probably know what you're going to get.

DC's September Solicits

I don't normally go through the solicitations with any great detail, just enough to pick out a Don't Ask post and that's about it. With all these zero issues coming out in September, a few things caught my eye:

Written by TONY BEDARD and KEITH GIFFEN
Art and cover by IG GUARA and J.P. MAYER
On sale SEPTEMBER 19 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
Where was the Scarab before it merged with the current Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes?
Look - Keith Giffen's writing Blue Beetle again! Couple that with the fact that the story's about the scarab before Jaime and the internet explodes with Ted Kord anticipation in three . . . two . . . one . . .

For Whom The Bell Tolls

The news is out: Captain Atom, Resurrection Man and Voodoo join the already announced Justice League International as being cancelled. Annoyingly (though I doubt DC did it just to piss me off) all four titles are ones I read.

Who Was Who Is Who #24

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a Killer Moth's chance.

KANJAR RO - one of the League's earliest foes, he's cropped up over the years; I think the last time was in the pages of Trinity. With the League being set up to take on the biggest foes, though, I'd be surprised if he gets a look in before the end of the year.

The Least Popular Author In The New DCU?

Looks like it's David Graves, one-time champion of the Justice League, author of dozens of books about mysterious worlds, magical artefacts and the League itself.

How do I know he's not exactly topping the New York Times bestseller list?

A couple of weeks ago, DC didn't even bother to show one of his books with anything other than gibberish text and this week, in the pages of Stormwatch, he just gets a generic description amongst the detritus of a professor's study:

See that? Just in front of Jenny Quantum - "Justice League Book"

Would it have been so difficult to do this:

And for those of you who think I have too much time on my hands, I'd like to point out that this whole thing took me less than ten minutes.

But yes, I do still have too much time on my hands.

Justice League Movie?

Poster by Alex4everdn.
SuperheroHype claim that Warner Bros are making plans for a Justice League movie, tying together the various DC heroes in one film.

It's a sad fact (only from the point of view of being a DC fan - I actually enjoyed most of the films) that Marvel has, over the last few years, cornered the market in superhero films with the success of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the like all leading up to this year's uber-successful Avengers film while DC have had next to no luck.

Guardians Of The Universe Come To Their Senses

At least they did in the Another Nail Elseworlds tale from way back when.

Now if we can just get the little blue munchkins to admit their mistakes in this Universe we can get back to liking the all-knowing guys as opposed to hoping that Hal Jordan and Sinestro beat the crap out of them.

Who Was Who Is Who #23

So for want of anything better to write about on a Monday, I'm going to go through all my copies of Who's Who and see if I can predict who will make it over to the new DCU by the end of 2012, who might make it and who hasn't got a J. Wilbur Wolfingham's chance.

JONNY DOUBLE - private eyes have never really regained the popularity they had in the 50's and 60's have they? For that very reason, I can't see Jonny showing up any time soon.

No Cocktail Today

As I mentioned in the week, there was only one comic from my pull list this week so I didn't bother heading into the comic shop.

In lieu of a Cocktail post, have a rather lovely picture of Power Girl in both her new and old costume:

Power Girl by Jamie Fay and Danielle Alexis St. Pierre.

You Know They Say You Can Never Go Back Home?

I'm afraid they're right.

This blog's about comics so I'm going to keep this brief and spoiler free.

Saw Prometheus yesterday evening and was thoroughly disappointed. It looked gorgeous and was well acted but . . . was rather boring. Wasn't engaging at all; you just knew all the characters except the obvious were there simply as cannon fodder; if the surprise passenger was meant to be a surprise it didn't work; and the continuity nerd in me wanted it to tie in better with Alien than it did.

The best part about it? Seeing a trailer before the film for Jaws getting a re-release in a couple of weeks!

Come And Have A Go...

Just seen the trailer below for a new DC Comics themed beat 'em up game called Injustice: Gods Among Us.

And while it looks nice - I like the bullet time slow motion sweeps - I'll not be buying it myself as I've never been a fan of two characters standing either side of a screen and beating the crap out of each other.

Although it is good to see that in this world at least, Wonder Woman gets some trousers (pants for my American readers)

Whereas this little beauty . . .

I cannot wait for the chance to have Superman ride a gorilla!
