Aquaman Ongoing Series

Horrendously busy in work at the moment but thought I'd mention the news about Geoff Johns and his new Aquaman series.

While never being a huge Aquaman fan in the past, I'll certainly be picking this one up later this year.

Anyone else going for it?

Monday Memes #13

Not content with having just a picture on the cover of your comic? How about a picture of a picture?

Pictures, posters, calendars - it's all good.

Ask anyone to name a type of poster, though, and their likely first answer would be . . .

A wanted poster - tried and tested.

Who Do You See?

I think this is great - borrowed from Richard Wiseman's blog:

Who did you see first? Wolverine or the two Batmen?

New New Look Wonder Woman

I don't pretend to any timeliness with this post - by now you'll all have seen the first photo of Adrianne Palicki as she'll appear in the title role of the Wonder Woman pilot that's filming at the moment.

As happened when her costume was redesigned by Jim Lee back in June last year, the fans have grumbled about the change in her look, by and large with few seeming to come right out and say they love it.

Me? I'm afraid, like the Jim Lee change, that I don't really care either way. Sure, I'd prefer red boots to blue to keep with the classic look a little more, but really? M'eh.

The thing I find most telling is the remark at the bottom of the DCU Source blog's post unveiling the new costume:
"Comments are closed."
I guess they expected a large number of negative comments (as they received for the Jim Lee redesign) and decided not to allow any right from the start.

Monday Memes #12

It's not many titles that can spawn their own meme but the Justice League managed it - all these could be consider Homages but it seemed so specific to the League titles that I threw them all together:

The one that started it - the relaunch of the Justice League following Legends - and the first issue of the JL Europe spin-off.

Over time, they played with it as well:

Ah . . . I miss the Justice League of those days.

Friday Night Fights - Going Somewhere?

In honour of St Patrick's day, Spacebooger has decreed a one-off "Green Gauntlet" fight featuring one or more green characters.

Sure, I could have gone for Green Lanterns, Arrows, Lamas, Goblins or Hornets, not to mention Hulks, She-Hulks, Martian Manhunters and Changelings but I thought I'd go for something different.

So with no commentary from me (because if this was a song you should all be singing along), have this:

Remember to head over to Spacebooger and vote, people.

Han shoots first in the pages of Star Wars #2 cover dated August 1977, written by Roy Thomas with art by Howard Chaykin and Steve Leialoha, though the scan comes from the Doomworld trade paperback.

You Are The Writer!

I don't spend a great deal of time over at the DC Comics message boards - I'll drop by if I'm shamelessly advertising one of the Annotations sites I've done but mostly when I do visit, I'm happy to just read the posts. I'm a lurker more than a contributor there if I'm honest.

Whenever I do call over there, though, there's one thing that always baffles me: the fan-fic threads. Pop along to just about any board and you'll see a thread where someone has started a story about that hero or team whether it's Booster Gold:

the Doom Patrol:

or even Zatanna:

The New Protector

So the DC Source blog revealed what follows Brightest Day - Brightest Day Aftermath: The Search - with the following description:
"Following the exciting conclusion to Brightest Day, the new protector of Earth has been chosen - but one reluctant hero makes a return to try and convince Batman, Superman and the rest of the DC Universe’s heroes that this may not be a good thing at all."
as well as showing the art for the cover:

I'm guessing the figure on the right is the "reluctant hero" while the one in front is "the new protector" so here goes my guesses:

The reluctant hero is Deadman - he's been one of the main character's of Brightest Day and has yet to fulfill his mission (at least at the time of writing) When he does, as with all the others, the white ring will then kill him hence him making a return for this Aftermath series.

The new protector? Judging by the silhouette and how pissed Superman looks, I'm going for Lex Luthor which is why the reluctant hero has to convince the heroes "that this may not be a good thing at all."

Of course, if I'm right it probably won't take much convincing!

A Public Service Announcement

Seriously. Just read more, folks.

I now return you to your irregularly scheduled blog.

Monday Memes #11

Why depict a character or two as though you're looking at them? Why not have the reader view them as though they were the characters themselves, seeing their own reflection?

It can be a lovely, subtle trick when used well:

or handled with less finesse or used as a source of humour:

Either way, On Reflection, there's more to come of this meme!

Four Becomes Three

In all the hullabaloo of Flashpoint, I've hardly mentioned the upcoming War of The Green Lanterns event that's going to be running around the same time as the GL movie will be out.  Specifically, there's been the couple of mentions of losing one of the Earth/Sector 2814 Lanterns.

At the end of Green Lantern #62, after getting his ass kicked, Hal Jordan has some sort of vision of the future:

That black on yellow dialogue fits in with what we've seen of Krona, intimating that Jordan's possession by Parallax was somehow a deliberate punishment from the Guardians. Then we have the Guardians themselves proclaiming how dangerous he is post-War (so he obviously survives - no surprise there) since "the loss of one of the Lanterns of Sector 2814."

Spandex Still Rules

As I do every now and then, I look at the stats for this blog and it's always nice to see I'm getting a healthy number of hits from both new and returning visitors - at least healthy as far as I'm concerned. One thing regular readers will know about is my continuing amusement and surprise that, almost month on month, my most viewed post is this one from October 2008, the dear old Spandex Clad Butt post.

Perusing Previews

Looking through the latest Previews the other day, trying to avoid spoilers on the series I read (and failing, mostly) I found a couple of things that made me chuckle.

Click on that picture above to read the directions on how to work out your Batman name!

Han Solo in Carbonite ice cube tray! Awesome!

Monday Memes #10

Similar to the Friendly Fire meme I've already covered once (and will be returning to again and again!) is the run-up to the fight or, as I've termed it, the Face Off - particularly effective when dopplegangers of the same heroes are used:

But it's also effective as a means of looking back - for example, which of these Crime Syndicate's is better?

The original from Earth-Three or the Qwardian version masquerading as the Conglomerate?

Flashpoint Covers

While I was out last night watching the comedian Stewart Lee, DC were busy throwing out the covers of eight Flashpoint mini-series that are due to run this summer.

Friday Night Fights - The Savage Hunter

It's Friday and we all know what that means, don't we? Fights!

Red Skull!

I am stupidly, stupidly busy with work right now so apologies for the brief posts lately.

I know you've probably seen this by now, but how fricking cool does Hugo Weaving look as the Red Skull?

Is it wrong for me, as a life-long DC fan, to be more interested in the Captain America and Thor movies than the upcoming Green Lantern flick?

Old Ads #2

Still wandering through the old classified ads from late 80's and early 90's comics and came across a number of shops and individuals selling comics.
